If I was an aspiring independent label owner in 2024, here’s how I’d run my company
I’ve run an independent label during the final years of the CD era, iTunes then SoundCloud era and now, in the streaming era. Artists are in the best position in years. Independent labels on the other hand have a problem. I believe artists should own their masters. So that means label owners have to not only ensure we do fair deals, but we have to also find a way to have control or ownership in IP to survive as a business. If I was an inspiring label owner, without millions in backing, I’d focus around 80% of my output using the “label is the artist” business model.
See, there’s a lot of content around helping artists, but no one is talking about sustainable ways to run an independent label while doing fair deals.
